Ivrea, located in the Piedmont region of Italy, has a rich culinary heritage that reflects the area’s history, agricultural produce, and local traditions. Here are some delicious foods you can try in Ivrea:

  • Risotto al Castelmagno

This is a classic Piedmontese dish made with Castelmagno cheese, a semi-soft cheese made from cow’s milk and traditionally produced in the Alps. The risotto is creamy and flavorful, with the cheese adding a distinct richness.

  • Bagna Cauda

A traditional dish from the Piedmont region, Bagna Cauda is a warm dipping sauce made from garlic, anchovies, olive oil, and butter, often served with raw and cooked vegetables such as celery, fennel, peppers, and artichokes. It’s a savory and unique experience.

  • Frittata with Potatoes (Frittata di Patate)

Potatoes are a staple in the Piedmontese diet, and in Ivrea, you can enjoy a frittata made with potatoes, eggs, and herbs. It’s often served as a snack or appetizer in many local trattorias.

  • Tajarin

Tajarin is a traditional type of Piedmontese pasta, often thinner than typical tagliatelle, made with eggs and served with various sauces. One of the most popular ways to enjoy it is with a rich sauce of butter, sage, and truffles—a true indulgence for those who appreciate Piedmont’s famous truffle season.

  • Vitello Tonnato

A dish with its roots in Piedmont, Vitello Tonnato is a cold veal dish served with a creamy tuna sauce. The combination of delicate veal and the savory, rich sauce makes this dish a beloved choice in Ivrea and beyond.

  • Panna Cotta

For dessert, Panna Cotta is a must-try. This creamy, delicate dessert is typically served with a berry compote or caramel sauce and is a sweet finish to any meal.

  • Polenta

Polenta is a staple in the region and can be enjoyed in a variety of ways—served soft and creamy, grilled, or with rich meat sauces like wild boar or braised beef. It's a comfort food beloved by locals.

  • Chocolates and Hazelnuts

Piedmont is famous for its hazelnuts, especially the Tonda Gentile delle Langhe variety, which is used in a variety of desserts and chocolates. Ivrea and the surrounding areas are home to local chocolate makers, so be sure to indulge in some decadent gianduiotto (a chocolate-hazelnut confection) or hazelnut pralines.

  • Orange-Themed Dishes

Given the city’s historical association with the Battle of the Oranges (the annual carnival event), you’ll also find some orange-themed dishes and desserts, such as cakes, marmalades, or even savory dishes that incorporate the citrus fruit.

  • Wine from the Canavese Region

The region surrounding Ivrea, called Canavese, produces some lovely wines, particularly Erbaluce di Caluso (a white wine) and Nebbiolo (a robust red). Pairing your meal with local wines is a perfect way to experience the culinary richness of the region.
